An actor is like water: Ananya Chatterjee
If the name Ananya Chatterjee does not sound familiar to cine goers beyond West Bengal, it soon will. She is the dusky, talented Bengali actress who has won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in Rituparno Ghosh's Abohomaan. She talks at length to Shoma A. Chatterji.
How and when did you get to know about the Award?
When I got the news from a news channel at around 4.15 pm, I was shooting for Subarnolata, based on the second part of a trilogy by the late Ashapoorna Devi. I play the title role and also the role of Subarnolata's mother in the serial.
What was your immediate reaction?
My immediate reaction was first to finish the shot that was ready. Then I had to address all the telephone calls and interviews that started pouring in all at the same time. So I was flying from shots to phone calls. The interviews and greetings lasted till three in the morning, so I guess I was denied the opportunity to react immediately. I guess it still hasn't sunk in.
Till date, you have played the female lead in three films of which one is an out-and-out commercial masala opposite Prosenjit and two are off-mainstream films. How do you differentiate among these three films vis- a-vis the characters you played in them?
The same way I would differentiate between two different characters I play in two films. Let me explain. In Dwando, I played a smart, sophisticated girl (Sudipta) who works in software. She is extremely strong, well- established, has a sober background and is educated.
In Abohoman, I play Sheekha, an unsophisticated, aspiring actress, not well read, not well bred, not established in her career, vulnerable and not of refined taste. These two characters are vastly different in terms of culture, background, taste, economic independence, their manner of speech, body language and attitude.
When one is acting, one must remember all this and more before one can portray these characters differently and efficiently. In the same way, in (the commercial Prosenjit-starrer) Mama Bhagne, the role demanded a little excess of vitality and a larger-than-life portrayal. That is how these three characters were different in three different films. They are also very different in their way of story-telling.
How do you define yourself as an actress? Spontaneous and natural? Trained and experienced vis-a-vis your television experience? Or, a director's actress where you like to surrender to the dictates of the director whole and soul?
Abohoman was my first big film. The director was Rituparno Ghosh. So, there was some amount of pressure and nervousness. I had to really prove a point. In Dwando, there was no pressure.
Director Suman Ghosh made sure that each member in the unit had come there to enjoy the pleasure of making a film. We had loads of fun and loads of serious work done without even realizing it. In Mama Bhagne with Anup Sengupta, it was again different.
Anup da is very respectful of his artistes. I got larger-than-life treatment while working in his film. The three directors make different kinds of films and have different takes on making the films, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed.
How do you define yourself as an actress? Spontaneous and natural? Trained and experienced vis-a-vis your television experience? Or, a director's actress where you like to surrender to the dictates of the director?
I cannot define myself as an actor. I believe that an actor should be like water – malleable, flexible, liquid, taking the shape of the vessel it is poured into. It is a different vessel each time, so the shape changes accordingly.
What differences do you find between acting on the small screen and acting for the big screen?
The only difference is that the big screen has a much longer shelf life.
Your megaserial Subarnonolata is getting perhaps the highest TRPs in Bengali television. Why do you think it has become such a big success?
After a long time television in Bangla is presenting literature that is a classic in itself, a famous novel penned by a famous writer who won the Jnanpeeth Award without ever having seen the inside of a school. It is a widely read classic among Bengalis across the world. The script, direction and performances show that a lot of care goes behind its making.
What does it feel like sharing National Award with Amitabh Bachchan? You are going to be sitting beside him for the Awards at the rehearsals and for the final function. Elaborate your reactions.
I think I will realize that on the D day. Like I said, I am yet to come to terms with it. I will wait for the moment.
Name some filmmakers you would love to work with - Hindi and Bengali
Aparna Sen, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Suman Mukherjee, Goutam Ghosh, Anjan Dutta, Raj Chakraborty and Pinaki Choudhury among Bengali filmmakers. In Bollywood, it could be anyone ranging from Anurag Kashyap, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Mani Ratnam to Dibakar Banerjee.
What according to you is the map of contemporary Bengali cinema?
Contemporary Bengali cinema is like the new generation. It is full of life, zest and promises.

Oil prices below $75 in Asian trade
SINGAPORE: Oil was down in Asian trade Thursday as weak US energy demand kept a lid on prices despite a weak dollar.
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for November, was down two cents to 74.69 dollars a barrel in morning trade and Brent North Sea crude for delivery in November was off four cents at 77.91 dollars.
Victor Shum, an analyst with energy consultancy Purvin and Gertz in Singapore, said oil prices should normally be up because of the weak dollar which makes the dollar-priced commodity cheaper to holders of other currencies.
But an unexpected rise in US crude inventories, which reflects soft energy demand in the world's biggest economy, has put a dampener on oil prices, he added.
The US Department of Energy announced Wednesday that crude stockpiles climbed by one million barrels last week, against analyst expectations for a drop of 1.7 million barrels.
"On the one hand, we have the US inventory report which is putting downward pressure on oil prices. On the other hand, we have the weak US dollar supporting pricing," Shum told media.
The dollar has weakened after the US Federal Reserve said it was prepared to take new stimulus measures if necessary to keep the US economy on track while leaving interest rates at record lows.
The US central bank said that the pace of the US economic rebound from recession has slowed.
"I think that the concerns about the economic recovery in the US will put oil no higher than the mid-70s (dollar level) in the short term," Shum said.
"With unemployment still at 9-10 percent in the US, consumer confidence and sentiment will be weak. It will be difficult to sustain oil at above 75 dollars under this environment."

Salman and Katrina Reunite!
Farah Khan is going to cash in the much talked split of Bollywood's star couple Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Both the actors will be seen together in an item song in Farah Khan's upcoming movie 'Tees Maar Khan'.
Katrina was left in anguish when Salman made a public announcement of their separation. Much drama followed after this but both of them are apparently trying to patch up for the sake of the movie as both of them agreed to share screen space for the item number. The actress was seemingly finding it tough to recover from the Salman Khan episode so the news of doing item number with him, comes as a great surprise to many.
The item number will also see the lead hero Akshay Kumar but the main attraction will definitely be the pairing of Salman and Kat.
Earlier, there was a buzz of Salman Khan doing item number for buddy Farah's film but now it has been confirmed officially. Well, it will be surely a shock for Shah Rukh Khan, who has been known to be a very close friend of Farah.
The choreographer turned director has turned friend to SRK's all time rival and even signed him for an item number in her movie. According to a source, Salman readily agreed to do the item number when Farah offered him this.
Akshay and Salman will be seen in the opening part of the item song and Katrina will be joining them after a minute. The source added that there will be some frames in which only Salman will be shown with Katrina. It will definitely incite interest among the audience!

Sonakshi jostled in a Mall, Salman furious
By Subhash K Jha
Hyderabad is one city that Salman Khan won't forget that easily.
It's the city where last week on Tuesday afternoon Salman, Sonu Sood and Sonakshi Sinha were mobbed jostled bruised and even thrown to the ground, and there was nothing that Salman and his 30 bouncers could do to control the hysterical mob.
The situation got so out of hand that Salman not only left the scene with his colleagues in an obvious fury he even cancelled another major event scheduled in Hyderabad for the same evening and headed straight for the airport to get home as soon as possible.
An eyewitness says, “Salman hates being pushed around in crowds. He feels he is there for the junta, so why do they need to jostle? But what happened at the In-Orbit mall in Hyderabad infuriated Salman. Sonakshi got pushed around. This was intolerable to Salman.
He has made a promise to Sonakshi's father that he will look after her. Salman can't bear to see his promise to the concerned father being compromised in any way. He immediately headed to the airport with her and caught the first flight out of Hyderabad.”
Confirming these incidents Sonu Sood who accompanied Salman and Sonakshi said, “All three of us were pushed around. Sonakshi and I even fell to the ground. I have bruises on my arms and legs. She too was injured.
The bouncers could do nothing. Salman was like, 'This is too much. We can't handle this, let's get out of here.' He cancelled the other event and we headed back to Mumbai by an earlier flight than the one we were booked on.”
Sonakshi who was recovering from the frightening tryst with Hyderabadi hysteria at her home on Wednesday morning was yet to understand the enormity of the situation.
Says Sonakshi, “The crowds in Hyderabad did go out of control. You know how it is when Salman is in public. Everyone wants a picture with him. The security was absolutely ineffective! We had to cancel the second event in Hyderabad and return to Mumbai.”
Sonakshi had to go to Hyderabad unescorted by a female family members. Her mother who generally accompanies her had to stay back in Mumbai due to a serious illness in the family.
Sonu Sood puts what the girl went through in a nutshell. “I guess Sonakshi is learning early in her career how dangerous fan attention can be.”

Dabangg actress Sonakshi Sinha is now enjoying the success of her debut movie forgetting her past relationship with Fame Cinemas' owner Aditya Shroff. Sonakshi had reportedly opted to move ahead with her Bollywood career when her ex-beau wanted to tie the knot with her. The 22 year old newcomer in Bollywood has much to do in the industry yet so she did not agree to marry 32 year old Aditya at this juncture.
